Sustainable Road Trip.

8th June - 14th June 2024.

Priestman Building, Sunderland, SR1 3PZ.

2024.

Exploring some of the North of England’s most scenic roads, ‘Sustainable Road Trip’ is a celebration of the landscapes in this stunning part of the country.

Conscious of the environmental impact of travelling by car, the project also explores how a road trip can be undertaken more sustainably, developing ways to make your mode of transport more eco-friendly, minimising the impact on the environment.

To help protect these wonderful locations for future generations, all of the emissions generated during the making of this project were calculated and have been carbon offset by donating to the Woodland Trust to support their sustainable rewilding projects in the UK.

Sunderland is changing: there is a mass of activity from the demolition of the former Civic Centre and Sunderland Central Train Station, to the development of Keel Square and the Vaux Site.  Focusing on these areas, I produced the project as a historical record of this development.  This body of work shows how my hometown is transforming for the better - Sunderland has been the same for many years now, so it is great to witness this growth.

Katy Wheeler said for the Sunderland Echo: “It’s been hailed as the most ambitious regeneration project in the country as Sunderland’s skyline changes almost daily”.   The aim of this work is to appeal to locals and potentially show outsiders how Sunderland is evolving for the better and my aim is to help people in the city to be proud of where they live.

My Journey

12th August - 16th August 2022.

Sunderland College, Bede Campus, Durham Rd, Sunderland, SR3 4AH.

Ten pin bowling has been a hobby of mine since I joined Excel YBC Sunderland when I was seven years old. So, I have been bowling for around fourteen years now. Over the years, I have bowled in many different bowling alleys around the country and had the pleasure of meeting so many different people. The work represents my ten pin bowling journey over the course of fourteen years. All the images that I have from these events have been collaged in the background. In the foreground are the eight bowling balls that I have owned over the years and own now. Inside those bowling balls are four images of myself bowling and four images that I feel are my best achievements. The image at the top is the first photo ever took of me when I started bowling, the image on the left is when I passed my coaching course to become a coach for the club, the image on the right is when I placed second in the Yorkshire Handicap Singles after bowling my best competition on average to date and the image on the bottom is a club photo from Nationals in 2018. The center portrait image represents all the various places I have been to bowl at around the country.

My aim for this piece of work is to show people my bowling journey and learn more about myself. I aim for my work to inspire people to take up a hobby and create memories like I have. Also, I hope my work gets people thinking about ten pin bowling and want to go and play. Because I love the sport and I hope other people will enjoy it too.
